When we talk about ‘nature’ today, what comes to mind?
Is it a traditional scene? Trees, mountains, rivers and plants?
What type of person do you see in this space?
At Futurimpose we’ve been exploring how many of society’s problems are rooted in this fixed notion of what nature is, and the idea that you have to be a certain ‘type’ of person, or hold a particular set of skills or knowledge,
to truly enjoy it. This isn’t right.
Everyone should be able to enjoy nature because everyone can have a different connection to it. That’s the beauty of it.
You cannot dictate people’s experiences of nature. It has no requirements. Just turn up and be. No rights, no wrongs.
As Flock Together has shown the world, it’s not about being a nature expert, hiking guru or even a bird watcher! Any connection to nature is better than none. For society to progress, the power of our individual relationships with nature needs to be harnessed, whatever they might look like.
In the current landscape, at the ‘top’ the same people are having the same old conversations. And it’s not working. Reaching people from all corners of society requires a new approach, with new definitions.
We can’t just use the word nature anymore because of all this baggage that comes with it.
It has been ingrained in us that nature is the opposite of culture. We even talk about ‘the outdoors’ without considering ‘nature’, despite the fact everything we enjoy in this space is a direct product of it.
For those who might just be starting out with a walk, it’s nature that makes the experience entirely. It is the red thread between the beach chair cocktail sipper and the seasoned skier. This makes it the essential cultural element of being outdoors and, with the new waves of people coming into the space, it has to be prioritised by the industry too.
In reality, everything is nature.
Us and everything that we in turn create are still part of it.
So if everything is nature, then that means nature can be anything - a feeling, a system, a mindset. We need to change how we think and talk about it.
That’s New Nature.
New Nature is a progressive positioning, aiming to connect the masses to the wonder of the outdoors - changing how we perceive ‘nature’ to benefit society as a whole. It represents a return to balance, exercising care and imagination to find new ways that we can live as one with our surroundings. A dynamic relationship between us and the rest of the natural world.
This is an open invitation to a different way of thinking, and the key to unlocking everyone’s connection to nature.
As an open-source concept by Futurimpose, we want communities and individuals everywhere to harness New Nature in their work.
We can’t wait to see the creativity that you’ll all bring to the table.
